KEES CAMP for ONE BILLION RISING: On February 14, 2013, at 12:00 p.m., Kees Camp Fitness Studio will rally hundreds of local dancers and activists for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. We at Hollaback! could not be more thrilled about this event!
ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. This Valentine’s Day, V-Day’s 15th anniversary, Kees Camp will partner with Drake University staff and the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault to stage a large community flash mob in Des Moines.
Jennifer Kees, owner and head trainer of Kees Camp, expects at least 300 participants, including women, men, and children, will dance together in this ONE BILLION RISING production. Joining V-Day’s global network of writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world, the group is organizing to express their outrage, demand change, and dance in defiance of the violence women and suffer.
“When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women,” said V-Day founder Eve Ensler. “Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together on February 14, 2013 to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up.”
Kees Camp members, trainers, volunteers, dancers, and members of the community will gather at Valley West Mall at 11:30 a.m. and begin the demonstration at noon. Videographers and photographers will be on site to document the five-minute production.
