Fall brings a fresh start and—we hope—fresh faces!

Are you worried about harassment? Are you looking for safe space to talk about harassment with people who are fun, energized, and committed to making Des Moines safer for women and the LGBT community? Or are you looking to take it to the streets and raise some hell? Then I have exciting news for you!
Hollaback! leadership is evolving. We are busy (you are, too), and our future depends on more people taking the reins on this issue that matters. We are looking for creative, enthusiastic team leaders who want to get involved in planning community outreach! Here are some things we would love to see happen in the next year, and we’d love YOU to be a part of it!
- Happy HOLLAween – Halloween is supposed to be spooky, but not because of sexual harassment! I’m thinking a “come as you are” event on sexy/slutty Halloween costumes and how Des Moines partygoers can Hollaback! resist this kind of denigration. Possibly a costume-making, costume-wearing, all-ages (or 21+), shindig in mid-late October
- Hollaback! Presents “The Vagina Monologues” – As Eve Ensler’s play celebrates its 15th year of production, we’d like to see more women in Des Moines get involved in the ONE BILLION RISING campaign to end sexual violence. No acting experience necessary; anyone* who “auditions” gets a part! Proceeds from the show (to be held in February) will benefit V-Day and a local beneficiary, to be decided by cast members. (*Must identify as a woman to be cast; men are welcome to join the production team.)
- International Anti Street Harassment Week – Already set for April 7-13, this is an event to get out in the (hopefully lovely) spring weather for a full-week of activism–the possibilities are endless!
- What else? Have ideas of your own? Of course you do; you’re awesome! C’mon and join the movement!
There will be an informational session/orientation for all Hollaback! leaders on Sunday, September 30 (time/place TBA). If you are interested in getting involved in Hollaback!, please contact me directly at dsm@ihollaback.org with your name and what project(s) you’d like to get involved with! (Or, if you simply want more information, that’s fine, too!) The more the merrier; spread the word!
